Markus, stariji čuvar koji je radio tu dvadeset i tri godine, stajao je pored nje. Posmatrao je kako se vraća ovoj slici već peti put večeras.
“Šta vidiš?” upitao je, iako je čuo različite verzije njenog odgovora pri svakoj poseti. Nešto u njenoj interpretaciji se stalno menjalo, poput oblaka koji menjaju oblik na sumračnom nebu.
Sara je nagnula glavu. “U početku sam mislila da se radi o izolaciji – vidiš one bakarne fragmente, kako su rasuti i nepovezani? Ali sada…” Pratila je prstom kroz vazduh ispred platna, prateći metalne šare. “Sada mislim da se radi o sećanju. Način na koji tamni prostori cure u svetlije delove, one srebrne kugle lebde kao zaboravljeni trenuci…”
Markus se nasmešio, sećajući se dana kada je umetnik postavljao instalaciju pre šest meseci. “Umetnik je delo nazvao ‘Ponoć u kvantnom kafeu.'”
Sara se okrenula prema njemu, iznenađena. “Stvarno? Nikad nisam pogledala natpis. Nisam želela da znam. Ali to je savršeno – kao… kao mesto gde stvarnost postaje maglovita na krajevima. Pogledaj kako zlato hvata svetlost – kao prosute zvezde na stolu kafića u tri ujutru.”
“Znaš,” rekao je Markus, nameštajući kravatu, “bio sam ovde kada su je okačili. Umetnik je proveo skoro sat vremena nameštajući osvetljenje. Rekao je nešto zanimljivo – da se slika menja u zavisnosti od doba dana. Jutarnje svetlo drugačije hvata one bakarne linije, čini da izgledaju kao mostovi umesto kao prepreke.”

“To je zato što pokušavaju da je razumeju,” odgovorila je Sara, zatvarajući svesku. “Ja sam prestala da pokušavam da je razumem pre tri posete. Sada samo puštam da ona razume mene.”
